Trip to Red Mountain Open Space

Come join us for a visit to Red Mountain Open Space!

This is a Larimer County natural area located 35 miles north of Fort Collins.

Red Mountain is nearly 16,000 acres of open grassland, with starkly contrasting deep red and light tan rock outcroppings.

There are seasonal streams flowing between the rocks.

Prairie dogs, badgers, coyotes, fox and prairie raptors inhabit this area. Pronghorn antelope, mule deer and elk can also be seen at times.

  • Dogs are not allowed at Red Mountain Open Space.
  • Collection of any artifact is strictly prohibited.
  • Bring water! - no water is available at the Red Mountain Open Space trailead.
  • Bring outdoor clothes! The area is remote and rugged. Be aware of weather conditions and watch closely for changes in the weather. High winds and extreme sun are common in this area. Quick moving thunderstorms are also common.
